Summary: Penny and the team think that have come close to finding the kidnapped victim, as Spencer remembers a key piece of evidence given to him by the victim's 3 year old sister.
“There!” Penny said. “I've located the girl, and the unsub. Oh, she's so precious...”
“Spare us the maternal instincts. Get me a lock on them, now.” Gideon all but barked. He turned to Spencer. “You and JJ are going along on this one. I've got a bad feeling.”
Spencer nodded quietly, and frowned, chewing his pen cap. “The last time we talked to her, she wouldn't give us anything...”
“Well, she was being watched. Only we didn't know it.” JJ said. “Now we do know. I think we'd better go talk to the mother.”
“No. Not a good idea. What if the house is being watched?” Gideon said. “Look, Penny will get us the location, we'll high tail it over there, and see what the situation-” He stopped, suddenly, when his phone rang. “Yeah, Penny?”
“Um, he's not there. It was a set up. I just looked at the cameras again. They're from two days ago.”
“Shit!” Gideon swore. “We've got to lock this son of a bitch down.”
“We'll get him, Gideon.” JJ soothed. She turned to Spencer. “Who did we last talk to in relation to this?”
Spencer checked his notes. “A Kaitlin Mercer.” Mrs. Mercer was the child's nanny, and hadn't been at all thrilled to be brought in. “She was the last person to see Jessica.” Spencer didn't believe Kaitlin was the unsub. It was clear from all of their other footage it was a male, but he wondered if Kaitlin somehow was involved. He handed the file back to JJ, and went to his desk. He needed some other notes he'd taken down during the interview.
“Reid?” Morgan said. His colleague and friend followed him. “You got more notes?”
“Something about Kaitlin didn't make sense, so I went and took a look around the house. I found her sister.”
“Kaitlin's?” Morgan raised an eyebrow.
“No. Jessica's.” Spencer said quietly. He held up a picture. “She gave this to me. She wanted me to have it.” The picture was a bad drawing of two people. One small, and one bigger, leaving the house. The older person in the picture was a man. Jessica's sister had explained. She'd never seen him before, but he'd frightened her. So she'd hidden.
“This could help us a lot. We need to talk to the sister again.” Morgan said. He turned to Hotchner. “Hotch, I think we've just identified a witness.”
“You don't understand, Morgan. She might not say anything else to us.” Spencer began to protest. “That was her only statement.”
“She witnessed a kidnapping. Her mother can be present if she wants.” Morgan said. “Look, Spencer, I know you've got a soft spot for kids, so you can talk to her. We won't even be in the room, alright?” He put a hand on the young agent's shoulder. “All we need is a name, alright?”
Spencer nodded. What else was he going to say? It was true that he and JJ were the ones that most often took the cases that involved children. Spencer supposed it was because he could relate in way that most of the others couldn't. He just hoped that the sister would assist them, and not hinder them.
