Summary: The BAU is given a new case, featuring a serial kidnapper. During a day on the job, Special Agent Dr. Spencer Reid reflects on his own kidnapping and torture, before JJ tries to convince him to go easy on this one.
Author's Notes: I am just recently learning the Criminal Minds fandom, but Spencer and JJ have been my favorites since I started watching it. This may or may not end up being a series of connected fics. We shall see!
It was another one of those days. Spencer was finding it so much harder to focus than usual, and drinking another cup of tea probably wasn't going to help. He set the half-empty cup down on his desk, and went back to working through the notes he had been gathering for another case.
This time, it was a kidnapping. These types of cases were the hardest for the young agent to deal with. He'd been a victim of a kidnapping at one point. It was how the FBI's Behavior Analyst Unit had discovered him in the first place. This guy, the current subject of the investigation, was sick. That was sure and certain.
“Hey, Reid.” JJ's voice broke into the young man's thoughts. “Take a break. You've been at it all day.”
“It's fine.” Spencer replied, offering her a slight grin. “The quicker this unsub is caught, the safer the rest of the country will be.” He started to turn back to his work, but JJ moved to take it from him. “Really, I'm fine.”
“Hotch said you'd do this.” JJ said. She sat down on the edge of the his desk, forcing him to have to look up at her. “Reid, it's okay. We've all got our traumas, you know? I don't want to imagine what you possibly think every time one of these cases comes up. Take it easy, okay? Don't try and save the world by yourself.”
Spencer studied her. He was still not sure how he felt about JJ, though he knew they were still very close friends. “I'll try not to.” He promised. With that, he stood up. “I should go check in, and see what's new.” He reached over, and took the folder from his friend. The agent turned, heading towards the group's meeting room.
“Hey, Reid.” JJ called after him.
He glanced over his shoulder. The woman held up a take out menu. He understood the meaning without the words. “Sure, just let me do this first.” As he continued towards his destination, Spencer couldn't help but grin. That was the effect JJ had on him.
