Summary:Hotchner delivers a grisly peice of evidence to the BAU team after a little girl is kidnapped from her home

“What've we got?” JJ asked. Spencer stood up, ready to hear what the preliminary investigation had found. He moved to stand close to the woman.

“A finger.” Hotch said. There was a note of disgust in the man's voice. “Found it in the family dog's mouth. Seems that our unsub didn't get away without a few scrapes and scratches.”

“The dog's a german shepherd.” Gideon said.

“Yeah, they're bred to protect their families. Some even go as far to kill if it means their owner is safe.” Spencer said, pushing a lock of his hair back over his ear. “Any sign of forced entry?” The team would need as many details they could get before the could start putting the kidnapper's profile together.

“No. It didn't look like it to me.” Hotch said. He glanced down at pad of paper with writing on it. “Found this in the victim's room, though.”

Spencer took it from him. The pad of paper was purple, and cartoon princesses all over it. The victim was a little girl. The agent felt his stomach twist in knots. He hated it when the victims were children. It meant two things. They were defenseless, and they didn't have a lot of time to find the unsub. Studying the pad, he noticed a few blood stains, though small, and writing that definitely wasn't a child's.

“Find Me If You Dare”

“Find me if you dare? Is he challenging us?” Spencer frowned. “Hell of a way to call us out, isn't it?”

“Us or the girl's parents.” Hotch said, taking the pad back. “I'm going to take this down to the lab. We need to know if the blood is hers, or the unsub's” As he left, Hotch turned to Spencer. “Reid, don't take this case on single-handedly. I know you take these personally.”

“Yeah.” Spencer said, turning to return to his desk. He still had a write up to do for the case they'd just closed. It was the distraction he needed.
