Summary: Spencer and the team receive a threat from Owen, sending the BAU into a panic, and leaving Spencer feeling desperate to protect the little girl he has grown to love
It wasn't often that Spencer thought about his own experience with being abducted, but today was going to be one of those days. He'd brought Lizzie to work with him in hopes of inadvertedly getting more information from the little girl. She was sitting next to JJ, showing her some pictures she'd been working on. JJ listened, one hand propping her head up. He took a minute to take his eyes off his charge to pour a copious amount of sugar into pure black coffee.
Elizabeth hadn't slept that night. Instead, waking up every hour on the hour. Most of the time she woke up screaming and crying for her mother. Others, it was Jessica she wanted. The final time, however, it had been Owen's name. Through it all, Spencer stayed by the child's side, only calling JJ the first time to give her some notes on what the girl told him. He figured the dreams could be just as useful as Lizzie was awake.
Hotchner and the rest of the team entered the room. He cocked an eyebrow at Spencer immediately nodding towards the little girl. "I see we have a special guest."
"I couldn't just leave her alone, and without agent protection." Spencer reasoned. True, he thought. If Owen was the one pulling the strings on this thing, he'd know that they had Elizabeth's mother in custody. The woman wouldn't take long to break, knowing that the FBI was holding the child from her.
"Fine, but um..." He moved closer, so that he could lower his voice. "Is it possible we could do this briefing without her in the room? I'm pretty sure she's not going to like the information I'm about to divulge about her mother." Hotchner was a man on a mission, usually, but he wasn't without heart.
"Yeah." Spencer agreed, knowing it to be the best decision. He took Lizzie by the hand. "Let's go meet Penny, okay? She's a lot of fun." He hoped Penelope was good with children. There was nothing that told him otherwise, at least.
"You too?" The little girl looked over at JJ expectantly.
Spencer's friend shrugged, getting out of her own chair. "Sure, I'll go." JJ gave Spencer a smile, squeezing his shoulder a bit. "We'll be fine. You can fill me in later, okay?" Without waiting for him to reply, JJ led the girl from the conference room, and towards Penny's office.

After Jj left, Spencer turned to Hotchner. "Well? What did you find out?" He sat down, pulling out his legal pad. The facing page was already full of notes. So he flipped to the back. With the click of his pen Spencer was ready to take notes.
Hotchner began to speak as the rest the team took seats. " elizabeth's mother is definitely involved. However, she is also a victim. The guy's name is Owen. Haven't been able to get her to give us the last name yet." He turned to Spencer then. The man held out a long envelope. " she wanna you to give this to Elizabeth, when she gets older."
Spencer took the envelope, shaking it lightly. " A letter from her mother?" Without another thought Spencer set it to the side.
Hotchner cleared his throat. "Jessica is not in the United States. Owen sold her into some kind of trafficking circle. " A frown crossed the man's face. He paused as several police officers walked into the room. " Right on time. We were just about to give a profile." He turned towards Morgan and Reid.
Spencer stood up clearing his throat. " last night, Elizabeth woke up screaming and crying. She said that Owen was wanting to take her somewhere on a boat. The unsub seems to have a thing for young children. However, his interest in Elizabeth appears to be purely because she knows too much. J.J. and I did some research. He targets women with young children. He convinces them they would be better off without their kids."
There was a collective gasp in the room. " Once he's done that, he manages to shift the blame to the mother. Turning her against her own children. We believe that was what happened with Elizabeth's mother. The mothers are often single, and usually very wealthy already. His goal is to make money off the children." Spencer had to stop there. The amount of hate he had for this Owen person startled him. The agent felt Morgan place a hand on his shoulder. He stepped back.
Before Morgan could speak however, J.J. walked in. He glanced over at her. " What's wrong?"
J.J looked at Spencer first. " He contacted us. He says we have 48 hours to hand over Elizabeth or Jessica will die. He knows where you live, Reid. And he's not working alone." Before she could even finish, officers and agents alike were up and moving out of the room. She moved to Spencer's side.
" Where is she?" It was all he could do to keep from running down to Penny's office right away.
" She's with Penny. She's fine." J.J rubbed his arm a little. The female agent looked over at Morgan and Hotchner. " Elizabeth can't go to Spencer's house right now. We'll take her to my place." The other two agents nodded. Then J.J turned to Spencer.
" Yeah okay. But I'm going too." Without waiting for the others to speak, Spencer left the room.
