Nostalgia Part 3: The Chipmunks Are Coming Home
So last night I pulled the trigger on buying the third Live Action/CGI chipmunk movie. I am happy about this purchase for a number of reasons. The most important reason though is one of complete surprise to me. What made me love that movie so much? I ask this question because even though I loved the first two in the franchise, this one seemed different for a number of reasons that I have yet to really pin down. I can tell you that my favorite character, Simon, is one of the main draws for all 3, but it is his alter ego, Simone that I fell in love with in this installment.
There is an interesting shift in dynamic when "Simone" appears after the spider bite. Instead of Simon looking out for Alvin and Theodore, it is Alvin watching out for the other two. Given Alvin's history, I was very amused because it is a rarity when we see the tables turned as they were in this movie.
Where Simon is cautious, and calculating, Simone is carefree and brave. Where Simon is shy about his feelings, Simone broadcasts his. And finally, where Simon is responsible, Simone is irresponsible. Yet we are left to wonder if there really is a part of Simon that is Simone.
Towards the end of the film, there is a lot of evidence to support that Simone is more than a mere side effect of the spider bite. Simon didn't have a personality change so much as have his true inner desires manifest themselves in the form of the French adventurer.
1. Even after the spider bite's effect wore off, he found a bit of "Simone" in him to rescue Jeanette who had been abducted by Zoe.
2. On the raft after they've all left the island, he finally tells Jeanette how he feels about her, and they seem to officially start "going out". He even recites the same line Simone said to her, although the wording is slightly different, and more Simon-esque.
3. On the plane at the end of the movie, when Jeanette asks to have the air turned down, Simon does this more...Simone like move. Which should be a clue to the fact that he and Simone are one in the same.
4. And the most obvious evidence is the name itself. Simone is the French equivalent to Simon.
Another sign that Simone is more of an outward manifestation of Simon's inner desires is the fact that Simon himself doesn't remember anything that happened until the others tell him. His initial reaction to finding out that he and Jeanette are "dating" is just priceless, and possibly one of my favorite points in the movie. Ah dear sweet Simon....
It's funny when I think about how much time I spent longing for this movie strictly to watch Simone. I guess it's funny becuase the title is "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked", not Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet Simone. LOL. The rest of the characters are just as entertaining, make no mistakes. But for me, seeing Simon like this... as SImone, somehow just made me love him even more. I look forward to the next movie in 2016.
Trivia: Up until VERY recently, I was convinced Simon was the eldest chipmunk. Was recently informed that Alvin was oldest and Simon is the middle brother. >.< My childhood is shot. LOL
